Kristin Davis: sex and the city's naughty nice girl - Interview
By: Chris Isaak

On the most recent season of Sex and the City, while producers went to great lengths to disguise the expanding stomach of mom-to-be Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis' character, Charlotte York, was doing a little growing of her own. Goody-goody Charlotte exposed a breast to a horny sailor and bedded a man she felt nothing for. Musician and fellow cable TV star Chris Isaak has seen the show and wondered the same thing we did:

Just how wholesome is Kristin Davis?

CHRIS ISAAK: Hello. How are you doing?
KRISTIN DAVIS: I'm good. How are you?

CI: Good, considering I just came off a 12-hour bus ride. So, while we were on the bus, I told the guys I was doing this interview, and we watched the episode of Sex and the City with the Navy guys. Was that a body double, or was that really you?
KD: That's me, but I don't really do nudity.

CI: On my show [Showtime's The Chris Isaak Show], I'm always writing nude scenes for myself. When we have actresses on, I always pencil in a shower scene, but they can tell it's my handwriting. [Davis laughs] Did you make them clear the set for that shot?
KD: Actually, for that episode we were at The Supper Club in New York, and there were probably 200 people there. So it was extremely tense and upsetting--

CI:--Well, you really couldn't see anything. Because on the bus, we hit the pause button and you couldn't see that much. And then we printed it out off the computer.
KD: Stop it! [laughs]

CI: So after we watched the episode, my drummer said, "Ask her if she was the most popular girl in high school." Were you?
KD: No. I can guarantee you I was not. I was busy doing theater and I had braids in my hair.

CI: Tell me what position your boyfriend played on what team, [Davis laughs] because this will tell me everything.
KD: Will it? I did date one person who had been on the football team, but he had been kicked off for being drunk at practice. And I had a basket-ball-playing boyfriend. He was a musician, too.

CI: So you have gone out with musicians?
KD: He played the guitar. Mostly as a hobby.

CI: What kind of stuff do you listen to?
KD: All different things. I have Diana Krall, Bjork.

CI: Everybody's got Diana. She's too good looking and sings too pretty. She can't last.
KD: That's kind of funny for you to be saying. I have your last record. It's really good.

CI: Never call the record the last record.
KD: Oh, sorry. The most recent.

CI: There you go. (both laugh) So what's next? Are you going to direct? Produce?
KD: If I was going to do anything, I'd be a producer, only because I'd like to have a say in what gets made and what doesn't.

CI: Don't you get a say? You're a star! If you don't like something and you say, "I don't like this line," don't they change it?
KD: I'd have to put a lot more thought into it than that, and then maybe they'd change it.

CI: At least they explain it to you. Me, I just get derisive laughter in my face.
ED: Aww. But you're Chris Isaak and it's your show! They have to listen to you.

CI: I'm writing that down. So you shoot the show in New York but you live in L.A.?
KD: Yeah. I had my house in L.A. before we started. It's a cute little house up in the hills. That's not your house on the show, is it?

CI: It's based on my house. When they decorated the set, I said, "Why don't you decorate it like my house?" and they just looked at me and said, "Well, we want it to look nice."
ED: [laughs] The predominant style of my house is "empty." My friends are used to it now, but at first they'd walk in and say, "When are you going to finish decorating?" And I'd say, "It's done!"

CI: When you're working in New York, who do you hang out with? Do you have a rat pack of friends?
KD: Absolutely. The girls on the show are like a rat pack. People don't believe us when we say that, but that's one of the joys of the show for me.

CI: Really? So what about this whole thing about you guys having a cat fight? You pulled each other's hair, knocked over a table, rolled around in some water--Oh wait. I'm sorry. That was a dream. [Davis laughs] So from today's interview, we could kind of guess that you're a pretty wholesome girl, you live in a small, empty house, and you're having a good career.
KD: I'm having a great career, though I think I'm not as good as your little scenario makes me out to be. So, do I get to do a sketch of you? Your whole thing on the show, from what I've seen, is that you're this regular guy who just happens to be this rock star that people think has all the beautiful models in the sand. Am I right?

CI: I couldn't be more regular if I lived on bran. So, I'm out of questions, Kristin.
KD: You're very good as an interviewer. You have a backup career, if you want one.

CI: I'm going to need one.
Chris Isaak's most recent album is Always Got Tonight (Reprise).

Even though he gets to flirt with the likes of subject Kristin Davis, singer-songwriter-actor Chris Isaak insists he's just like everybody else. Oh, except for a few things. "I live on a bus, travel around with my buddies and play music all the time," he says. Isaak released his most recent album, Always Got Tonight (Warner Bros.), in February, and will return this winter to Showtime's The Chris lsaak Show.
